Normani’s debut album Dopamine has finally arrived.
The 13-track set features 2021's "Wild Side" with Cardi B, "1:59" with Gunna, and her official second single "Candy Paint." Moreover, the album highlights the talents of James Blake on the track "Tantrums" and integrates Brandy's background vocals on "Insomnia."
"DOPAMINE represents a season of liberation and freedom, celebrating her journey to this pivotal moment," according to a press release.
After dedicating numerous hours to carefully listen and analyze each track, I have identified five exceptional standout songs, three of which I would have picked as the leading singles!
TOP FIVE
5. Insomnia
This song captivates with its mesmerizing and angelic background vocals. The production's minimalist approach ties into that light and airy feeling, adding to the song's allure. The deeply personal and beautifully toxic lyrics draw me in, and the discovery that Brandy contributed additional vocals adds an extra layer of intrigue to the listening experience. It wouldn't be far-fetched to imagine that the song was recorded during Brandy's B7 sessions.
4. 1:59
The song encapsulates Normani's signature style with its bold and confident lyrics delivered in her nonchalant yet powerful vocal style. The infectious rhythm and smooth guitar melody are reminiscent of NSync's "Gone," creating a nostalgic yet contemporary vibe. Gunna's addition to the song is the perfect finishing touch, adding an extra layer of depth and excitement.
3. Big Boy
Being the opening song on the album, Big Boy establishes the energetic tone necessary for the Dopamine journey. Top-tier production. The infusion of horns, along with references to Southern heritage by paying homage to legends like Outkast and UGK, creates a rich musical tapestry. Additionally, the inclusion of a chopped 'n' screwed sample from Houston rapper Mike Jones adds a unique and captivating layer to the track.
2. Candy Paint
This track exemplifies Normani's distinctive sound, boasting a production that is both understated and infectious. The lyrics exude confidence and sass, complementing Normani's effortless vocal technique. When you think of Normani, dancing comes to mind. This song is definitely one of those tracks.
1. Wild Side
To me, this is a defining song. It's one of those special songs that solidifies the sound you've perfected during the recording process while finding your unique style. That's why it's my number-one pick on this album. Considering it was released back in 2021, I wouldn't be surprised if it set the standard for the rest of the album's recording sessions. This confidently casual track still holds up as a showcase for Normani at her very best and is another reminder of what Normani is capable of. The inclusion of Cardi B is akin to adding the perfect topping to your favourite dessert.
Here are the three tracks we would've picked as singles:
1st single: Wild Side
2nd single: 1:59
3rd Single: Candy Paint
